Let me start by introducing myself. My name is Ryabov Dmitry. I am a post-graduate student of the economic faculty.
A have prepared to talk about Russian Railways.
The topic is of particular interest to me as at present I am working as an economist in one of the enterprises of the Gorki railways. Being a post-graduate student I am doing research in the field of railways economics.
So to start with I must say that the quality of infrastructure, and how comprehensive the transport network is, will influence the role transport plays and its contribution to the functioning of a successful economy. The rail transport network secures connectivity between different parts of a country, as well as to the rest of the world:
No doubt, because of the country’s huge territory and vast natural resources, a highly developed railway system is vital to Russia. Rails connect 85 of Russia’s 89 regions and provides services to most major cities and have a direct impact on growth, industrial development and regional integration.
Now I’ll go on to outline the Key Facts & Figures of Russian Railways. The Russian railways are largest network in the world with 85,200 km of track – 43,000 km of which are electrified. Carries over 1.1 billion passengers and 1.1 billion tonnes of freight annually across 11 time zones. Responsible for 43% of Russia’s total freight traffic and more than 41% of passenger traffic. Employs over 1 million people. Comprises 987 enterprises and 165 subsidiaries. Russian Railways run national and international freight services for all types of commodity, ranging from coal, iron ore, cement and oil and oil products to automobiles and grain using specialised tank, box, flat, open-freight and grain cars. Russian Railways provide a full range of passenger services in most parts of Russia and a wide variety of international and tourist routes and tours.
Finally, I` d like to say some words about the future of Russian railways. According to the Strategy, total investment in Russian rail transport up to 2030 will be 13.7 trillion roubles, 20% of which will come from the federal budget, 5% from the regions of the Russian Federation and 75% from private investors, including 42% from Russian Railways. The measures planned as part of the Strategy will ensure Russia’s development as a country of innovation with a GDP increasing 4.5 times and industrial production 3.2 times by 2030. Russian Railways are planned to build over 20,000 km of new railway lines by 2030. To ensure that the demand for rail transport services will be met, the Strategy envisages that by 2015 all the locomotives and wagons which have finished their operating life will be retired from service. The technical standards of the new rolling stock will be up to global levels.
That`s everything I wanted to say about Russian Railways.
I
had be very happy to answer any questions you may ask.
