INDUSTRIAL REGIONS OF BELARUS
Belarus is a developed industrial state. Industry makes up 70% of the Gross National Product. The main industries are engineering, chemical industry, wood-working industry, light and food industries. The major industrial centres in Belarus are Minsk, Gomel, Vitebsk, Mogilev, Brest, Grodno and others. Belarussian goods are exported to many countries and known, all over the world. Agriculture of Belarus specializes in milk and meet production, flax, vegetables (especially potatoes) and-fruit (especially apples).
And now I want to tell you about the main industrial regions of Belarus. Mogilev is one of the biggest industrial and cultural centers in the Republic of Belarus.
Mogilev holds around 4 % of the total industrial output of Belarus. About half of the region's economical share (48,6%) is held by Mogilev town. High concentration of industrial enterprises (71 enterprises), developed infrastructure and qualified labor force result in the balanced increase of the real economic sector and social sphere.
The dominant branches in the industrial complex of Mogilev town which form almost the whole foreign trade turnover are chemical and petrochemical (32, 3%), machine engineering and metal processing industry (30,3%), food industry (12,1%), light industry (10,9%). The flagship of chemical industry is ОАО "Mogilevchimvolokno" which is the biggest enterprise in Europe producing chemical fiber. The second leading industry is machine engineering and metal processing. The major republican production output of elevators, automobile equipment, trailers and semi trailers for trucks, electric motors, steel pipes is provided by the town's machine engineering enterprises. About 4% of goods' output is held by metal processing industry. The enterprises manufacturing construction materials provide the industrial, social and cultural objects of the town and region with building materials, prefabricated reinforced concrete structures and general construction parts. Food and light industry enterprises are being developed dynamically as part of consumer goods' sphere of this town. Over a third of the output volumes fall to the share of light industry of Mogilev while over a half of these volumes of goods is exported.
In spite of the tough competition, industrial enterprises of Mogilev are well known in all the countries of the world due to the development of their logistic and commodity distribution network, opening of their own foreign trade representation offices and storage facilities.
The town's advantageous geographical position along with the largest industrial potential in the Republic of Belarus have given unlimited

opportunities for the enterprises of this town for fruitful cooperation with corporate partners within the country as well as abroad.
Brest region has favourable natural conditions for the development of all spheres of human life activities. The region climate is moderate continental, transitional to maritime.
The region is sufficiently rich in natural resources. There is the largest granite deposit, which is used for the production of construction crushed aggregate (Mikashevichi). The unique clay deposits are situated in Stolin region, the largest in Belarus chalk deposit "Hotislavskoe" is located in Malorita region. Glass - making and molding sands, common salt are met every where, large reserves of mineral waters have been revealed. Industrial complex of Brest region is presented by more than 300 industrial enterprises, which manufacture products at the amount of more than 3 milliards of dollars, and at the same time more than 2/3 of it is manufactured in the non - governmental sector.
Nowadays the region produces up to 9 % of republican volumes of industrial manufacture production and up to 19 % of consumer goods, the output of which stably and dynamically increases every year. In the whole volume of the industrial production food industry (up to 37 %), machine engineering and metal working (up to 20 %), woodworking industry (up to 12 %), electrical power engineering (up to 9 %) have the largest specific weight. The significant segment in the manufacture structure is occupied by light industry and construction materials industry (share of which is more than 6 %).
Large producers of the region are JE OJSC "Brestgazoapparat", OJSC "Brest electric bulbs factory", LLC "Pinskdrev", Baranovichi machine -tool factory, LLC "Atlant", Zhabinka sugar - refinery, RUPP "Baranovichi manufacture - cotton association", OJSC "Pinsk manufacture - trade association "Polesye", OJSC "Brest Stocking Mill".
Considerable contribution to the region and republic economics is brought by the created for the recent years enterprises: Byelorussian - German JE "Santa Impex Brest" ad its leading enterprise JE "Santa Bremor" LLC, CHUMP "Kompo", JE "PP "Polesye" LLC, CC "Involux", IP "Inkofud", private enterprise "Construction equipment and materials", CHUPP "Furniture factory "Laguna".
Brest region traditionally has the agrarian specialization with the prevalence of large commodity manufacture. 2/3 of meat and more than 70 % of milk are produced in agricultural organizations.
Agricultural enterprises of Brest region have high development potential of meat and milk livestock farming, potato growing; they are engaged in growing of vegetables, sugar beet, and flax. Practically 1 / 5 of the republican volumes of meat, milk and potato is provided by Brest region.
4.
Most important for the national economy are the fuel and power resources discovered in the region. There are almost 1,500 deposits of peat which accounts for 30% of the energy balance of the republic and is used as a construction material and fertilizer. Commercial oil was discovered in 1964 near Rechitsa. Since then more than 100 million tons was extracted.
Gomel Region has a significant industrial potential and is one of the
technologically advanced regions in Belarus.
More than 300 large and medium industrial entities are located in the
region. Their share in the total industrial output of the republic is 17%.
The leading industries are: fuel and energy, chemistry, ferrous metallurgy,
oil, food, forestry, woodworking and pulp and paper industries. The share
of mechanical engineering, instrument making and metal working industries
is also quite significant.
The region is the only oil and gas extracting region and the only producer of
rolled stock, fodder choppers, glass panes, and linoleum in Belarus. The
region also produces more than 85% of steel, 53% of automobile gasoline,
over 45%) of diesel fuel, almost 47%> of fuel oil, 46% of cardboard, about
31%> of wood chipboards, almost 25%> of plywood, paper and metal-cutting
tools.
The agro-industrial complex can meet the main food requirements of the
people and provide raw materials for the processing industries. The main
agricultural sectors: beef and dairy husbandry, vegetable farming and potato
growing, and also flax growing (in the eastern part of the region). The farms
located near big cities supply milk, vegetables, potatoes, poultry, pork and
eggs.
The region is a grain growing area (49% of all cultivated land). Potatoes
occupy about 12% of cultivated land in all types of farms, vegetables and
technical crops - 4.2%o, fodder crops - 34%>. Almost 1,000 milk farms
supply milk.
15 commercial pig farms keep 73%> of all pig stock. Pork produced by these
farms accounts for about 86%> of all pork production in the region. There
are also 10 poultry farms and 9 farms specializing in egg production.
Gomel Region conducts export and import operations with more than 70
overseas countries which account for over 25% of overall foreign trade
turnover in the region.
The most dynamic is the development of trade with Germany, Poland,
Egypt, Italy, Belgium, Austria, and Latvia. The volume of foreign trade is
steadily growing.
The region imports machines and equipment, ready made foods, and
chemical products from overseas countries. Commodity exports are
dominated by metals and metal products, as well as mineral products.
The main foreign economic partner of the region is still the Russian
Federation. Ferrous metals and products account for nearly one third of the
export of goods. The region also supplies mineral products, textile and

textile products, machinery and equipment, wallpaper, cardboard, and white ware.
And now I want to tell some words about the industry of our capital. Staying at the strategic crossroads from East to West and from North to South, from Moscow to Warsaw and from Vilnius to Kiev, Minsk is an important transport junction with several bus and railway stations, 2 airports (1 national) and metro network.
Within a system of the united economic complex of Belarus the city possesses developed industry, science and scientific services, transport and management and finances. Industry is represented in the following fields: machine building, electronics, textile, construction, food industry and others. More than 300 industrial enterprises are registered there. City's share in the Republican industrial output overcomes 22 %. Minsk, the industrial centre of the Republic of Belarus, is specialized in the economic system of the Republic in such fields like industry, construction, science and scientific services. Minsk enterprises give 1/5 of the total volume of the industrial production of the country. Near 60% of this production are exported abroad. The basic industrial export positions are tractors, camions, metal-working machine-tools, refrigerators, TV sets, moto-cycles and bicycles. Minsk products are exported to more than 100 countries of the world. The volume of foreign trade in 2006 was USD 18,1 billions including USD 6,6 billions for export.
The main consumers of Minsk products are in Russia, Ukraine, Baltic States, Germany, Great Britain and Netherlands.
