Analysis of the text “Ragtime”

The text under analysis was taken from the book Ragtime written by Doctorow. American author, who is published in over thirty languages. He is famous for his novels “Welcome to hard times”, “the book of Daniel”, “Ragtime”

The theme of the story is the relations between two people and forgiveness. The action takes place in America in 19 century.

The plot of the story centered around the black pianist and young Sarah. The story is written in the form of 3d   person narration. As for me this text are dramatically, melodramatic, sentimental. When we read this text we can see the structure of the text:

The exposition starts with the author’s description of Walker looking for a young woman – Sarah.

The development of the story is when he saw baby in carriage and he started to come every Sunday.

The climax of the story is when the father asked to play in piano. The family enjoys the music and C.Walker decided to play more.

The outcome of the story is when C.Walker played his final composition, said good bye and walked out of the door. The author describes the 2 main characters – Sarah and C.Walker. C.Walker was stocky man with a red-completed showing brown face, high cheekbones, large dark eyes, a neat moustache.

Sarah were emotional, intelligent, trustful calm woman.

The author use stylistic devices to express emotions and show all paints of the text. Such as: Epithet – respectful, self important, vigorous, mute unforgiving …. Parallel construction – always mocking… Repetition – colored man, Negro, Shine, Blow…and so on.

The problem of the story deal with the relations between different people and people, who can do everything for their high position in society.

The author conveys the idea that people should be able to forgive past mistakes, that then they don’t to regret for all life.
